Interview with Pete Kurath, cultural and real estate entrepreneur. Written by Melanie Gath.
From his very first answer, it’s clear: Pete Kurath is honest and direct. He isn’t afraid to show his true colors. The Swiss cultural and real estate entrepreneur is a father of two. His daughter is already 34 years old. Pete admits in an interview with Franz that, back then, he got pretty much everything wrong in his role as a father. But he learned a lot from that experience – lessons he now wants to put into practice with his six-year-old son, hoping to do things differently this time around.
He talks about a new division of roles within the family and the challenges this new setup brings into his everyday life. At the same time, he makes it unmistakably clear that without his wife, Patricia, the whole system would simply collapse. “It doesn’t work without her,” he says plainly. Together, they face the many new challenges and quiet shifts that come with having a family. While they used to travel the world as a couple, they are now getting used to weekends shaped by tennis lessons and swimming classes.
When asked what he’d like to do better as a dad, or where he still sees room for growth, Pete says: “I’m very urban. My life happens in the city.” But he also knows how good spending time in nature is for his son. “He loves being outdoors,” he says. However, Pete admits that heading out into nature together is something he still has to learn. He often felt like he had to be the perfect guide. But he is starting to realize that’s not what it’s about at all: “You just have to do it. I don’t need a plan. I don’t need a strategy.”
